When Your Parents Have an Emergency

Dennis D. Duffy · Aug 24, 2012 ·

Have you ever imagined that your parents are in a horrific accident? If you have, it might have been in a nightmare or an uncomfortable premonition that hopefully did not come to pass. It can be horrifying to think that something has happened to one of our parents. Of course, we all know that someday our parents will pass away. We just do not like thinking that it will be today.

If you ever do get that call, there is something that you can do today to make sure that the experience is not as bad as it could possibly be. Talk to your parents about the different possibilities. Ask them what your responsibilities might be and how your parents want you to carry those responsibilities out.

If you are lucky, your parents have a comprehensive estate plate that includes Powers of Attorney. If they do not, you should encourage them to get one as it makes handling emergencies easier. It makes things a little less horrifying. If you are a parent reading this, talk to your children about what to do. If you do not have an estate plan, contact an attorney today and start the process of getting one.
