4 Estate Planning Tips to Help You Begin Your Planning

Dennis D. Duffy · Jun 17, 2011 ·

If youre just starting your estate planning, you may be nervous about the planning process. Its important to know that everyone feels a little scared about planning for the future. Not only does planning involve difficult thoughts but it means you will have to make hard decisions. Take a look at the following tips to help make the process easier. If you need help knowing how to begin your plan, meet with an estate planning attorney.

  • Understand your priorities. If youre a parent, your main concern is probably protecting your children. Its a good idea to think about your priorities and then begin your planning. This will help you set goals. Your attorney will want to know whats important to you and what you want to get out of your estate planning. This helps to make a plan that is as effective is possible.
  • You will need to plan for difficult situations. Part of planning involves difficult topics such as disability, illness, and death. Its important to work through these topics so that you are prepared for possible emergencies. Dont let these issues scare you away from planning!
  • Ask questions so that you fully understand your options. You want to make sure that your plan meets all of your needs. If you have questions, make sure that you ask them. Your attorney wants to make sure that you feel confident with your decisions!
  • Stop making excuses. Begin your planning now. We all have busy lives and find that we put off many of our goals. Estate planning is not something that should ever be put off. If you keep putting off your planning, you will never know if you ever get the opportunity to create your plan.

If you have any questions about the planning process or if youre ready to start your estate planning, consult with a qualified estate planning attorney.
