A Checklist of Things to Consider When Creating Your Estate Plan (part 2 of 2)

Dennis D. Duffy · Jul 17, 2011 ·

When thinking about your individual estate plan needs, you will need to think about the documents and tools that you will use. We’ve taken the time to outline a checklist of some estate planning recommendations to help you create a plan that meets all of your needs. If you have any questions or if you’d like to create your estate plan, meet with our estate planning attorney.

  • Have you recently reviewed your beneficiary designations? Your retirement accounts, life insurance policies, and pensions will require you to designate a beneficiary to receive your assets after your death. In many cases, you may completely forget to make updates. Take the time to review and update your beneficiary designations to make sure that match your current intent.
  • Have you considered your funeral wishes? Many people choose to include these plans in their estate plan. This can help to take some of the difficult responsibilities away from your loved ones while they are grieving your death. It can also allow for your wishes to be followed. Talk with your attorney about including this in your planning.
  • Do you have all of your information organized? You should have all of your documents in a safe and organized place. Your loved ones should also have access to your documents. It’s a good idea to keep a list of important account information including passwords and usernames with your plans. You should also include contact information for your attorney and professional advisers.

Take the time to carefully consider all of your needs when creating your estate plan. You want to make sure that all of your affairs are in order. Work with an estate planning attorney so that you have the best plan possible. If you have any questions or if you’re ready to start your estate plan, consult with our qualified estate planning attorney.
