Estate Feuds Coming to TV

Dennis D. Duffy · Jun 28, 2013 ·

The field of estate planning is not something that is largely considered to be glamorous. However, in the near future we may be seeing estate disputes being highlighted on a reality television series.

A series that is apparently going to be named Will Wars is in the works according to The Trust Advisor. This reality show would recruit members of wealthy families who are battling it out over the distribution of an estate. The objective would be to guide things toward some type of resolution.

The above gives you some food for thought when you are planning your own estate. There could be members of your family who wouldn’t mind being on television, but there is little doubt that you would like to see them make their debut appearances in a different forum.

Last year the actor Sherman Hemsley passed away. We don’t know exactly what he did or didn’t tell his estate planning attorney if he did in fact consult with one. What we do know is that a man named Richard Thornton stepped forward to challenge the will. He contended that he was entitled to an inheritance because he was Hemsley’s brother.

This came as a total shock to Hemsley’s close friend Flora Enchinton, who was his sole heir and executor. The dispute held everything up for quite a bit of time, and Hemsley’s body was not laid to rest properly in a timely manner.

This is the type of surprise that can throw things into disarray after you pass away. It is important to let your attorney know about every detail that could be relevant so that he or she can recommend steps that prevent disputes before they hit the television screen.
