How Does an Estate Planning Attorney Help Me?

Dennis D. Duffy · Dec 20, 2010 ·

Unlike a generic estate plan or document downloaded from the Internet, an estate planning attorney tailors your estate plan to fit your needs, your lifestyle and your relationships. The downloaded forms may give you peace of mind in thinking you have your final wishes in place, but most of the time those forms are only for the most generic of situations and lifestyles.

An estate planning attorney makes sure your documents reflect the latest laws and changes in how your estate is handled. Your estate plan will also be individualized to your states laws and regulations. Internet documents have trouble doing this. Using an estate planning attorney also gives you someone to call directly about any questions or issues that arise when making your plan. The attorney will also help you remember little details of your financial status through a thorough interview and inventory of your assets, debts, investments and future earnings. This is not something an Internet form will cover.

An estate planning attorney can make changes to your estate plan as your circumstances change. Your marital status may change, a child or grandchildren is born, a beneficiary dies suddenly, or you retire. Whatever the change in your life, the estate planning attorney will know what needs to be changed, updated or perhaps initiated.

An estate planning attorney understands how detailed or simple an estate plan you need. If you should have extensive property holdings, property out of state, a child with special needs, overseas assets or other uncommon needs, an estate planning attorney understands the proper method of handling these situations. Trying to use a downloaded form may be as difficult as fitting a square peg into round hole. You need an experienced legal representative to tailor your plan.

Make certain that your estate is properly handled by an experienced attorney estate planning attorney.
