Natural Disasters Help to Show the Importance of Estate Planning

Dennis D. Duffy · Sep 7, 2011 ·

As tragic and upsetting as natural disaster can be, they can help to stress the importance of proper estate planning. With recent disasters such as Hurricane Irene, people are forced to think about what would happen if they were to die without notice. An estate plan is essential so that youre protected during emergencies. Take a look at the following information, to learn more. If you have any questions, or if youd like to begin your estate planning, contact an estate planning attorney.

Natural disasters can be extremely scary for all involved. Many people lose their lives and leave their families behind, because theyre unable to get help during an emergency. It can also be scary for outsiders to watch as so many helpless people are injured or killed during a natural disaster. Its important to have a plan in place, so that youre protected, no matter what happens.

With an estate plan, youre able to prepare for the worst case scenario. This means that you can have all of your affairs in order, so that youre in control and your family is protected, even if you die. Additionally, you can use an estate plan to prepare for possible incapacity. This can allow you to have a say in your financial and medical affairs, even when youre unable to communicate your wishes or give informed consent.

Protecting your family also means that you ensure that they have sufficient assets in the event you are incapacitated or die. You can make sure that you have assets for their care and that you have the appropriate amount of disability and life insurance in place.

Take the time to meet with an estate planning attorney, so that you can create your estate plan. You never know when an emergency or natural disaster may occur, but you can control how prepared you are for the future.
If you have any questions about the estate planning process, consult with a qualified estate planning attorney.
