With any luck, you are going to live long enough that you will no longer be able to take care of all of your daily needs. That’s not to say that you will be completely helpless, but you will have things that you forget to do or that it would just be better to have someone else do for you. It is important to think about what will happen when that time comes.
Someone will have to handle your finances and make your medical decisions. However, not just anyone can do that. The legal authority needs to be established before someone else can handle your affairs. To get that legal authority. someone else needs to go to a Court and ask a judge to be appointed your guardian. There are some problems with this. It is expensive and time-consuming. Even more importantly, what happens if the judge appoints someone you do not get along with?
Rather than worry about those problems, you can do something different. Talk to an estate planning attorney about getting Powers of Attorney documents. Those let you decide who will take care of your affairs.
