How to Choose an Executor

When creating your will, you will need to appoint an executor. This person will be responsible for helping to manage your estate affairs after your death. Its important to choose a reliable, honest, and responsible executor so that your affairs are in good hands. Take a look at the information below for advice on how to choose an executor. If you have additional questions, or if you need help choosing an executor, meet with an estate planning attorney.

Your executor should be reliable. Is your executor able and ready to handle all of the responsibilities associated with the job? Does he or she have enough time to commit to all of the duties? You should carefully discuss this with your executor ahead of time, so that you know youre making a smart choice.

Your executor should be able to interact with beneficiaries. Does your executor know your beneficiaries well? Does everyone get along? Your executor will have constant communication with your beneficiaries until all of your estates affairs are handled. Its important to choose an executor who is able to communicate well with your beneficiaries.

Your executor should be organized and detailed. Your executor will be handling many duties, including many legal and financial tasks. Its important to choose someone who is able to keep good documentation. This will ensure that your affairs are handled correctly and with extra care.

Your executor should be trustworthy. You should feel very comfortable with your decision. Your executor will be handling many private matters. Its a good idea to choose someone who youve know for a long time, so that you feel comfortable in their honesty.
