Senior Star at Elmore Place Offers Virtual Dementia Tour for the Community
Duffy Law Office, PLLC is first group in Quad Cities to participate
DAVENPORT, IA (April 10, 2014) Senior Star at Elmore Place, one of the states leading organizations in providing stellar dementia resident care, announces today that it is now offering the Virtual Dementia Tour (VDT) for the community.
Through this unique tool, the Senior Star team is able to provide a compelling education regarding the critical needs of those who are living with Alzheimers by demonstrating the impairments caused by the disease. The outcome of this education leads to a better understanding of the disease which leads to more comprehensive care for those who have Alzheimers and other forms of dementia.
Led by a team of Senior Star memory care experts, the program creates the most realistic scenario possible utilizing a home-like environment with tools and daily living activities to depict what it is like for someone living with dementia. Participants are asked to perform tasks in an altered state whereby the VDT artificially impairs the senses affecting the ability to interpret the environment. Their reactions to the impaired sensory input lead to behaviors such as wandering, talking to oneself and not following instructions, behaviors often seen in dementia. Therefore, VDT is able to illustrate that these behaviors are human behaviors and not specific to dementia, and the actions taken to cope with the impaired senses are very similar to the unpredictable behaviors of individuals with dementia.
We are so pleased to be able to offer this powerful tool to anyone in the community that is interested in learning more about the behaviors of those living with Alzheimers, said Marc Strohschein, executive director of Senior Star at Elmore Place. It is extremely helpful in understanding this terrible disease and learning how to cope and care for those suffering from Alzheimers and other forms of dementia. We encourage the community to visit us and take the tour it is an eye-opening experience.
Duffy Law Office, PLLC is the first group in the Quad Cities to experience this powerful demonstration. Employees from the firm will be taking the tour on April 17 beginning at 8:30 a.m. at 4500 Elmore Avenue in Davenport. As an estate planning and elder care law firm, our goal is to not only serve our clients but also serve them well, and we have a proactive mission to help clients ward off any emergency situations by having early discussions on key topics, said Dennis Duffy, founding attorney of Duffy Law Office, PLLC. We receive many calls from clients who dont know what to do with their aging parents and we feel its our duty to be prepared to address these important questions. This Senior Star program struck a chord that we all need to work on our empathy and having all of our employees take the VDT is an essential component to our service. This experience will further position us as skilled practitioners who can provide our clients with both knowledge and empathy thats what makes us better at our jobs.
The VDT is a scientifically proven method designed to increase sensitivity toward those with dementia and is registered through its creator Second Wind Dreams, a not-for-profit organization that developed the program.
